Project Management in Information Systems

This course covers the following four important aspects of information systems project management:

• Methods and tools used to plan, organize, and control IS projects,
• Management methods revealed through practice and research,
• Hands-on project management knowledge from different real-world scenarios, and
• Intercultural differences in project management

The project life cycle will be divided into separate phases:

• Project Initiation,
• Project Planning (Scope Management, Time Management, Cost Management, Quality & Risk Management),
• Project HR & Communication Management, and
• Project Monitoring & Controlling

Within this framework, the methodologies and tools necessary for each phase as well as the underlying theory will be provided.

Throughout the course, the methodologies and tools will be adapted and applied to a real-world project scenario in an international and culturally diverse setting within a remote working team.

Learning Outcomes

By completing this course, students will be able to:

• Apply project management techniques to business cases (e.g., optimize the target setting process, develop work breakdown structures, develop schedules and action plans, monitor project progress, manage risk throughout the project, and implement project controlling);
• Contrast project management techniques such as agile and waterfall, pointing out their strengths and weaknesses;
• Apply team collaboration techniques and digital interaction tools;
• Organize tasks in a remote working team;
• Apply negotiation strategies and methods to business cases;
• Recognize and distinguish between the various roles and responsibilities within an IT project team;
• Apply the various project management methods and tools to help manage project risks, budgeting, resource allocations etc. within time and budget constraints;
• Exhibit characteristics of a project manager which include interpersonal, organizational, communication, negotiation and problem-solving skills;
• Describe and reflect the characteristics and critical success factors of projects;
• Have fruitful group discussions and carry out respectful teamwork in international and culturally diverse teams;
• Present their results in written form and by oral presentations;
• Acquire further relevant information independently and critically;
• Improve or adapt management techniques to new situations;
• Recognize how soft factors like cultural aspects, team dynamics, and leadership approaches affect project success;
• Apply project management techniques and bear responsibility for small and medium-sized IS projects

Students studying information systems or related fields are welcome to apply for the course. Maximum capacity for the course is 20 participants, as international students will be integrated into a regular semester module within the study program Business Information Systems (B.Sc.) at Frankfurt UAS. 

Students will earn a total of 5 ECTS points for the successful completion of the course. 

A single ECTS point is defined as the equivalent of 25-30 hours of student workload, which includes class hours, readings, preparation for class activities, as well as assessment measures.
